March 2, 2006 Heinz Center Board Meets in Washington, D. C.
The Heinz Center Board of Trustees held its first meeting of 2006 in Washington, D. C. on Thursday March 2.
Led by new Chair Rita R. Colwell, trustees received program and financial updates, as well as reports on activities from board subcommittees. On the eve of the Heinz Center’s tenth anniversary, President Thomas Lovejoy introduced a draft report on the Center’s institutional foundation, accomplishments and goals for the future.
The Sustainable Oceans, Coasts and Waterways Program presented the featured program of the meeting, the Center’s new coastal initiative. James Baker, President of the Academy of Natural Sciences and chair of the steering commission for the initiative, launched the discussion of “The Nation’s Coasts: A Vision for the Future.” The proposed national dialogue on coastal building and management would involve representatives from the business and scientific communities, environmental organizations, health and disaster response experts, and all levels of government. Still in the planning stages, partners and funders for the program, as well as steering committee members, are currently being identified.
Trustees will hold their next meeting in Washington, D. C. on July 13, 2006.
