In partnership with state and federal wildlife managers, the Heinz Center’s Environmental Reporting Program is building a project to help the wildlife conservation community measure progress and report results.
The Heinz Center is compiling knowledge from conservationists around the country, fostering information sharing among the community and helping to identify best practices for monitoring and evaluation. Business, academia and the non-profit sector – who all benefit from sound information about wildlife – are also engaged in the project.
Although the project is focused at present on the new State Wildlife Action Plans, the strategies and approaches that are being developed will be applicable to other wildlife management activities.
The project has been funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, through the Wildlife Habitat Policy Research Program of the National Council for Science and the Environment.
The project goals are to:
- Determine the types of indicators that will give wildlife managers the information they need to make good decisions
- Identify the steps in setting up a successful wildlife management reporting system
- Explore indicators currently used to evaluate the results of wildlife management efforts
- Recommend performance measurement tools for use by the wildlife management community.
To learn more about the project please contact Jonathan Mawdsley at (202) 737-6307 or mawdsley@heinzctr.org.
Initial funding for this project was provided by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, through a grant from the Wildlife Habitat Policy Research Program of the National Council for Science and the Environment.
