Health Implications of Technological Responses to Climate Change

Alternative Fueled BusThe public health implications of new technologies are usually recognized only after widespread adoption of technological innovations, and often by experts and individuals other than those responsible for their design and implementation. In November 2000, The Heinz Center and the Health Effects Institute, with support from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, hosted a two-day workshop to explore the current state of understanding of the human health effects of low-carbon technologies. The 17 participants from industry, environmental organizations, government, and universities included public health specialists and experts in various emerging technologies. The workshop identified eight technologies of top concern, articulated the health concerns known to be associated with their use, and pointed out key uncertainties and gaps in knowledge.
