The Heinz Center Board Elects Sherwood Boehlert as Trustee

(Washington, D. C.) The Heinz Center Board of Trustees announces the election of the Honorable Sherwood L. Boehlert, former Congressman (R-NY).

“We are truly delighted that Sherwood Boehlert has agreed to join our Board,” said Rita R. Colwell, Heinz Center Board of Trustees Chair.  “Sherry is a person of unparalleled integrity and his dedication to science and technology has been immensely valuable to the Nation during his many years as a legislator.  His wealth of experience in public policy will be very important for our work in identifying environmental policy solutions.”

A native of Utica, New York, Mr. Boehlert was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1982 and retired in 2007 after a twenty-five year career.   During his tenure he served on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Science Committee, which he chaired from 2001 until 2006.

Thomas Lovejoy, Heinz Center President, said of the election, “Sherwood Boehlert has long been a wise leader on environmental and natural resource issues in Congress, as well as a strong proponent for science.  His record of encouraging a scientific basis in decision-making is a perfect match with the Heinz Center’s philosophy, and we look forward to him playing an integral role in our organization.”

Since leaving Congress Mr. Boehlert has joined the Accord Group Inc., a Washington, D. C. based government affairs firm.  Through June 2007, he is also serving as a public policy scholar within the Environmental Change and Security Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center.

The Heinz Center, established in 1995 in memory of Senator John Heinz, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan institution dedicated to improving the scientific and economic basis for environmental policy and to developing innovative solutions to environmental problems.
